A real commercial used to be a rich company's toy. A crew, a director, actors, a five-figure invoice, and six weeks of waiting. For most small businesses the answer was simple: you just didn't have one.
That changed faster than almost anyone noticed. This month I produced a full 50-second spot, ten scenes, consistent characters, captions, the works, without a camera ever turning on. Total cost in generation credits: less than a dinner for two. Time: one afternoon.
What actually changed
Three things landed at once.
First, the video models got good. Not "impressive for a robot" good. Actually good. Faces stay the same person between scenes. Motion looks like camera work instead of a lava lamp.
Second, character consistency arrived. You create your "cast" once, a spokesperson, a mascot, a product hero shot, and reuse them across every ad you ever make. Your brand stops looking different every time you post.
Third, the price collapsed. The tools run on credit packs that cost less per month than one boosted Facebook post.
What AI video is genuinely good at today
Short spots, 10 to 30 seconds. Product showcases. Explainers. Mascot content. Seasonal promos you would never pay a crew for, like a Labor Day special that only runs for one weekend. The stuff that used to be "we should really do a video someday" and never happened.
Where it still falls on its face
Honesty time, because this is half the value of hiring anyone in 2026: knowing where the magic stops.
Long scenes drift. Hands still do strange things. Text inside the video comes out mangled, so your logo and offer belong in an end card, not in the scene. And platforms now label AI content, so the play is paid ads and owned channels, where labeling costs you nothing, rather than chasing organic reach with it.
Most of all: the tools do not know your business. They will happily make a beautiful ad with the wrong message. The strategy, the offer, the hook that makes someone stop scrolling, that part is still a human job.
What this means for you
If you have been putting off video because of cost, the excuse expired. A small local business can now run a fresh spot every month, tuned to the season, for less than you spend on coffee for the office.
Want one without learning five new tools? That is literally what I do. Send me your business and your offer, and you will have a commercial before your competitors finish asking their nephew about it.
